Secure and competitive energy for all

Recent events have only emphasised the importance聽of delivering secure and competitive energy for all UK聽consumers, all whilst we transition to net zero 鈥 the聽task is huge. Chemistry is by default energy intensive,聽and even in a net zero world chemical processes and聽production require significant amounts of energy.

Where聽that energy comes from hugely dictates the ability to聽decarbonise and ultimate exposure to high energy and聽carbon prices for both the chemical sector and many聽of the supply chains it underpins. Not only does this risk聽the competitiveness of existing assets in the UK, but it聽also jeopardises the much-needed private investments聽to secure jobs and the essential building blocks of聽existing and emerging technologies transforming UK聽manufacturing.

  • Put into action the UK鈥檚 long-standing聽commitment to delivering the lowest cost聽energy bills for all UK consumers and, beyond聽Europe, cost competitive prices for energy and聽trade intensive industries.
  • Implement effective regulator duties in the聽energy transition to protect all consumers聽(including those sitting in industrial and聽commercial sectors).
  • As a minimum, retain existing relief schemes聽for trade and energy intensive industries聽and look to build a wider level playing field聽opposite competitor energy prices.
  • Abolish the UK-only Carbon Price Support聽(CPS), which inflates UK industrial electricity聽prices with no environmental or economic聽benefit.
  • Ensure those consumers that are constrained聽in transitioning away from gas in the short聽term are not inadvertently penalised with聽higher or disproportionate energy prices.
